Stand Up For This Sea Turtle’s Survival!
Sign Kinzie’s Petition
The critically endangered leatherback sea turtle
relies on important habitat off the coast of California
– so why is the federal government considering allowing
highly destructive drift gillnets to operate in these
Sign Kinzie’s Care2 petition urging federal
fisheries managers to deny a proposal to allow
driftnets into the Pacific leatherback conservation
The Pacific leatherback is the world’s
largest turtle and one of the biggest living reptiles
on Earth. During summer and fall, these turtles swim
6,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean to feed on
jellyfish that are abundant off the California Coast.
Western Pacific leatherbacks have
declined more than 80 percent over the last three
generations and drift gillnets are one of the reasons why.
Stretching over a mile long, drift gillnets ensnare and
drown sea turtles and other important marine life.
Since 2001, the Pacific Leatherback Conservation
Area (PLCA) has protected sea turtles by prohibiting
drift gillnet fishing along parts of the California and
Oregon coasts during their migration.
Allowing destructive fishing gear into a
protected area is a horrible idea, and needs to be
stopped. The death of even one Pacific leatherback sea
turtle would decrease the species chances of survival
Sign Kinzie’s petition and encourage the head of
the National Marine Fisheries Service to deny this
If enough of us take action together, we can show
our fisheries managers that sea turtles have support
across the country, and keep their habitat protected.
