Help stop Bayer from selling bee-killing pesticides

Dear Peoplesbarknews reader,

Spring is just around the corner. Gardeners are starting to plan out their gardens for the year. But Ace and True Value — the 3rd and 4th largest garden retailers in the U.S. — are still selling plants and products with bee-killing neonicotinoid pesticides. Meanwhile, the EPA is still not doing enough to ban these toxic products.

This is unacceptable! Bees are still dying at alarming rates — and we know that neonics are a key factor. If we eliminate these pesticides, we have a real shot at saving the bees. But we need your help to make that happen!

What’s standing in the way of saving bees? The pesticide industry. After all, it has huge profits at stake. Bayer — one of the leading manufacturers of these pesticides — has  made billions off of the sale of neonics.

And Bayer is doing everything it can to ensure it continues to profit off these pesticides.    It even spent nearly $6 million on lobbying in 2014 alone!

If we want to stop Bayer the Bee-Slayer, we need garden retailers and the EPA to take action. That’s where you come in.

You signed petitions, made phone calls, and delivered letters to your local Lowe’s and Home Depot. Your activism helped convince both garden retail giants to take action on bee-killing pesticides. And just this month, more than 30,000 Friends of the Earth members like you turned up the pressure on Ace and True Value by pledging not to shop there until they follow Lowe’s and Home Depot’s lead!

At the same time, you’ve been telling the EPA to ban neonics altogether. The agency is starting to listen. It placed a moratorium on new uses of these pesticides. And last week, more than 32,000 people like you told the EPA to ban Bayer’s top-selling neonic — imidacloprid — which is up for review.

We know eliminating these pesticides will help bees. We’ve even seen it happen — Italy went from losing 37.5% of its hives in 2008 to only 15% in 2010 after it restricted neonics! If after just a few years the bees rebounded that much, just imagine what eliminating all bee-killing pesticides here in the U.S. could do.

We’re gaining momentum in this fight, but we still need your help to get these pesticides banned once and for all.

Give $15 to Friends of the Earth and help get bee-killing pesticides out of our food system! [ ]
