URGENT: abortion ban in West Virginia

Dear friend –
Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in the Texas abortion case, Whole Woman’s Health v Hellerstedt. Outside the court over 1,000 abortion-rights activists – including the three of us – rallied to demonstrate support for protecting reproductive health. We listened to incredible speakers from all parts of the reproductive justice movement: abortion providers, people who had abortions, women of color, faith leaders, transgender people, leaders of international organizations, and community activists.
We heard, time and time again, how the decision to have an abortion is an intensely personal one and is different for each individual. We heard about all those who will suffer if politicians are allowed to interfere in these decisions and prevent doctors from providing the best possible care.
We stood shoulder-to-shoulder with passionate advocates from across the country to #StopTheSham – advocates who know that when it comes to abortion, what happens in one state could affect all of us.
That’s why we need your help: West Virginia’s governor just vetoed a bill that would ban a safe, common method of abortion, and we need to make sure the legislature doesn’t override the veto.
We’ll say it: This bill – like the Texas laws under consideration in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt – is straight-up nonsense. SB 10 would eliminate what doctors consider to be a medical best practice for performing safe abortions. Medical experts like the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists oppose this bill. So why are West Virginia state legislators pretending they know better?
Demand that the legislature let the governor’s veto stand. Politicians who think they know better than doctors? That’s a sham.
Already this year, politicians in more than 30 states have quietly introduced anti-abortion legislation. We went to the Supreme Court to fight this pernicious wave of restrictions – we’re not going to sit back when any state tries to prevent us from accessing our right to safe, legal abortion.
A right without access is no right at all. Stand with us and everyone who joined the rally in DC or online – tell the legislature they must not override the veto.
Thanks for all that you do. You inspire us, and you make us proud to come to work every day.
