2015 SDOA Endorsements & Mobilization

 SOA WATCH SPRING DAYS

Replyto: Arturo@soaw.org

Dear/Estimad@ Supporter,

En español a continuación

The “Drug War” is militarizing, incarcerating, and killing communities, especially traditionally oppressed peoples in Latin America and in the U.S. The War on Drugs, along with other scare tactics and slogans, is being utilized by the Pentagon, police, and politicians to justify the increasing use of military weaponry and tactics to repress dissent and other fundamental human rights. The enforced disappearance of 43 students from Ayotzinapa, Mexico once again proved that the disastrous results of U.S. military aid and training in Latin America are ongoing. As the U.S. imposes the Drug War on the rest of the hemisphere, the line between police and military inside the U.S. is also being blurred. Ferguson and other U.S. cities have reminded us that police militarization and the treatment of black and brown people as internal enemies are also major problems in the U.S., while putting into context what militarization looks like on the ground for so many in Latin America and beyond.

We are now asking you and other organizational allies to (1) ENDORSE the 2015 Spring Days of Action (SDOA), and (2) MOBILIZE their members/supporters for the SDOA in Washington, DC April 22 – 25. This year’s theme is “Growing. Stronger. Together. Resisting the Drug War Across the Americas”

Please click here to fill out the Spring Days of Action endorsement form: http://org.salsalabs.com/o/727/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=17114

The 2015 Spring Days of Action (SDOA) will entail actions in the street and in the halls of Congress (including “radical lobbying” and Non Violent Direct Action – NVDA) to hasten the end of militarization and the Drug War. There will also be time for us to meet, strategize, socialize, and party!

Grassroots lobbyists will support legislation to ban the transfer of military weaponry by the Pentagon to U.S. police, a review of all U.S. military training of Latin American soldiers and police, and all are invited to agitate for an end to the destructive Drug War in the Americas.

2015 SDOA Schedule of Events:

4/22 – Wednesday Night – Kickoff Karaoke at Haydee’s Restaurant and Bar in Mt. Pleasant

4/23 – Thursday – Grassroots Lobbying/Radical Lobbying Workshop & Congressional Lobbying

4/24 – Friday – Congressional Lobbying/NVDA/Critical Mass Bike Ride / Friday Night – CONCERT!!!!

4/25 – Saturday – Strategy Session/Fishbowl & NVDA

Questions? Suggestions? Ideas? Please contact Arturo – arturo@soaw.org or (202) 234-3440

Pleasant

jueves 23/4 – Taller Cabildeo de Base/Cabildeo Radical y Cabildeo en el Congreso

viernes 24/4 – Cabildeo en el Congreso / NVDA / Ciclistas – Critical Mass Bike Ride; viernes por la noche – CONCIERTO !!!

sábado 25/4 – Reunión de Estrategia y NVDA

Eleanor J. COMMON CAUSE

Replyto: Sarah Swanbeck

causenet@commoncause.org

Dear pbnb reader,

Imagine paying more for your internet and cable service. Now imagine fewer choices for providers and even worse customer service. Hard to fathom it being worse, right?

Well, currently federal regulators are considering whether to make that nightmare a reality – by allowing Comcast and Time Warner Cable to merge. Here in California, the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is also evaluating the merger to determine if it is in the public interest.

Could you take a minute to sign our petition and ask the PUC and Attorney General Kamala Harris to oppose the merger?

http://act-ca.commoncause.org/site/R?i=wIAg1OWUqxiqUqMYHPBqig

The consolidation of these two companies would create one giant megacorporation that would have control over the quality and cost of your internet and cable services. It would also give Comcast unprecedented gatekeeper control over the news content that you have access to.

California has an opportunity to set the tone for the country – a stop of the merger by the state PUC would be a huge boost to our effort to block the merger federally. But time is running out for us to take action.

Please take one minute to sign the petition asking the PUC and Attorney General Kamala Harris to oppose the merger.

BREAKING: FCC Announces Open Internet Rules

COMMON CAUSE

REPLYTO: causenet@commoncause.org

Dear pbnb reader,

BREAKING: Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler just proposed new rules that would deliver strong net neutrality for generations to come!

Over 4 million Americans asked him to make sure providers can’t throttle the Internet for their profit, and from the look of his new proposal, he listened. This is a big deal.

But we’re not done yet. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, Big Cable and Big Telecom have three weeks to call in every favor they have on Capitol Hill and block the FCC from acting. They’ll stop at nothing to derail net neutrality, especially now that we’re so close to victory. It’s up to us to fight back.

Tell your lawmakers: don’t do the industry’s bidding. Let the FCC enact its net neutrality rules.

EMERGENCY: Keep the Dream of Red Wolf Recovery Alive

Defenders of Wildlife

Replyto: defenders@mail.defenders.org

Dear pbnb reader,

Why would a federal agency completely abandon three decades of painstaking wolf conservation for no good reason?

Hard as it is to believe, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is actively considering abandoning recovery efforts for the critically endangered red wolf. It would be an unjustifiable and tragic act on their part. And we can’t let it happen.

Your urgent donation to Defenders will help protect red wolves and other vulnerable species from coast to coast.

http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=tlOeK9u761oKg29ZZ_84wA

Just last month, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission passed a resolution asking FWS to declare the red wolf extinct in the wild. This would bring more than three decades of painstaking wolf conservation to a screeching halt and could doom the last wild packs.

Shockingly, FWS officials have said they will seriously consider the request!

Red wolves, smaller cousins of the gray wolf, once roamed across the southeastern United States. Habitat loss and extermination took a deadly toll. By the 1970s, only a few of these shy animals remained in captivity. In 1987, red wolves were reintroduced into a small area in eastern North Carolina. Today, roughly 100 red wolves are making their

last stand for survival in a five county area in North Carolina scrub forest.

Defenders has been a stalwart supporter of red wolf reintroduction since the program began, and we have consistently won court battles to secure the protection of red wolves.

Please help us continue the fight to save endangered red wolves and other vulnerable wildlife!

http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=Gs2yP10r75YFiRFFwqaFbQ

As recently as 2013, we went to federal court to stop the practice of night hunting for coyotes in the red wolf recovery zone. Coyotes and red wolves look a lot alike in broad daylight. At night they are nearly impossible to tell apart. Dozens of red wolves have been shot and killed in recent years as a result. After the court ruled in our

favor on night hunting, the state agreed to discontinue the practice.

For FWS to agree with the North Carolina Commission’s request to walk away from red wolf recovery in the wild and shut the program down would be a monumental mistake and tragedy.

With your continued support, we can keep the dream of red wolf recovery alive.

Won’t you help today?

Thanks for all you do.
